Hi, I am Punta Gorda Healthy Chocolate blogger, Lynette Henk. Today’s post explores the link between CRP levels, inflammation and heart disease. What is CRP? CRP is a measure of C-reactive protein in the blood. You can get your CRP tested when you get your cholesterol measured. A high level of CRP tells you that inflammation is present in your body.
The health dangers of inflammation are well established. If your blood vessels are inflamed, you may be at risk for heart disease. A high CRP level can occur even if no other heart disease risk factors are present. The Mayo Clinic has an article on this if you want to read more.
What does this have to do with Beyond Chocolate?
Antioxidants are able to lower CRP levels, which can reduce inflammation. Inflammation is responsible for over 200 diseases. The main ingredient in Beyond healthy chocolate is cacao. Cacao is the #1 Antioxidant Food.
The National Institute of Aging conducted a study in 2004 which found a link between antioxidant supplements and lower CRP levels. According to the researchers: “taking an antioxidant supplement was associated with CRP levels similar to those seen in those who exercised 180 minutes/week or more and did not take supplements. This is impressive information!!“
I am certainly not recommending that you stop exercising by any means! I just thought it was important to point out that the NIA study showed just how effective antioxidant supplements are in reducing CRP levels even in people who do not exercise. Really the best combination for heart health is antioxidant consumption coupled with regular exercise. Including plant based foods and diet can be helpful.
How are you able to get your antioxidants you may wonder? Beyond healthy chocolate, of course! Of all the antioxidant and flavonoid rich foods available in Southwest Florida, Beyond dark chocolate is the most delicious and satisfying in my book!
I share Well Beyond Healthy Chocolate products along with Remity Nutraceuticals with people in Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Babcock Ranch and North Port. If you come to one of my Healthy Chocolate open houses or find us at the local Punta Gorda Farmers Market, you can purchase a sample bag of our healthy chocolates and find out how delicious and healthy these products are. No wonder Kathy Ireland said, “I love you guys. You make healthy taste delicious!” Once you sample Beyond chocolates you will love them as much as we do! They are delicious belgian chocolates with just 35 calories and 1 gram sugar per piece. Sweetened with acai and blueberry, they are not just delicious, they are good for you too! Ok, so you did not want to make a New Years Resolution
. I get that. Many people make them and fail before the end of January. So now it is the end of January and the perfect time to start eating right and improving your health. Maybe even lose some weight, right.
So what is the best option? Well we know that diets don’t work. The best choice is to make lifestyle changes you can live with. One of those options is to incorporate Beyond Healthy Chocolate into your diet. I eat a minimum of 3-4 pieces of Beyond Healthy Chocolate every day spaced out morning, mid day and evening. When your goal is to lose weight, it is important that before Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner or snacks that you eat a piece of Beyond Chocolate (35 calories and 1 gram sugar) 30 minutes before every meal with a glass of water. This will curb your appetite and help you to eat less, all while eating chocolate!
I also recommend you incorporate Remity Balance. Combining the right scientifically studied and supported strains of probiotics, with the correct prebiotics and digestive enzymes, REMITY Balance™ is formulated to support overall gut health.
4 strains of probiotics
One Capsule Each Day
Does Not Require Refrigeration
Shelf Stable For One Year
According to “Are Happy Gut Bacteria Key To Weight Loss? Imbalances in the microbial community in your intestines may lead to metabolic syndrome, obesity, and diabetes. What does science say about how to reset our bodies?” a Mother Jones article. “If we take care of our gut microbiota, it will take care of our health,” Cani says. “I like to finish my talks with one sentence: ‘In gut we trust.
So our sweet and greasy diet—almost certainly without evolutionary precedent—doesn’t just kill us directly: It also changes gut permeability and alters the makeup of our microbial organ.” Based on this, I strongly recommend you incorporate Remity Balance for improved gut health. It is a new product and I just started taking it on Monday. Within a few days I actually noticed weight loss around my stomach area. Was this what I was missing?!

Have you heard of Synbiotics? I know, I know, I normally talk chocolate all the time but honestly when I found out how important a synbiotic formula of probiotics, prebiotics and digestive enzymes and how important they are for all of us to take daily, I felt I needed to share.
I recently read an article called “Daily Synbiotic Supplements May Nudge More Weight Loss In Obese Kids” by Healthcorps. org. Specifically the article mentioned ” A recent report in Beneficial Microbes showed that obese kids who were put on a calorie controlled diet and an exercise plan lost more weight when they took a symbiotic (probiotic) supplement, compared to a control group that just used diet and exercise for weight loss.
This is the first study of its kind to show that taking a food supplement can impact oxidative stress s and change gut microbe population in teens, helping to further nudge weight loss.”
Now that caught my attention. In addition to weight loss there are many benefits. This Brand New Synbiotic blend distributed by Well Beyond called Remity Balance, is a proprietary blend of Probiotics, Prebiotics and Digestive Enzymes. I personally have my entire family taking Balance daily. After understanding the benefits of a synbiotic probiotic blend, it is clear that everyone should be taking this affordable functional food daily. It is recommended to be taken first thing in the morning. That is what we are all doing.
Jeff Graham, Co-Founder of Well Beyond had this to say about Remity Balance. “A Synbiotic Formula…four strains of clinically studied probiotics (they survive your stomach acid), prebiotics (food for the probiotics) and digestive enzymes to help pull nutrients from your food…who should take this formula? Answer: Everyone! Adults, kids…if kids can not swallow capsules, then open capsule and pour into their drink or on their food….amazing formula!”

Lupus in Remission After Eating Healthy Chocolate says Chocolate Missionary!
To meet Dana Alsop is quite interesting if you have suffered with an autoimmune disease or any type of chronic pain because honestly she understands and has been there. She shares a passion for helping others improve their symptoms and lead a better quality of life. Her drug of choice? Healthy Chocolate. Yes, you heard that right. CHOCOLATE! Her mission in life has become that of “Chocolate Missionary“. She was a stay at home mom who was dealing with a severe case of systemic lupus that greatly affected her quality of life. When she found healthy chocolate, she said she felt she had an obligation to share it, so she did.

Those of you who have been following my blog for some time understand I have been dealing with autoimmune issues as well as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue for over 16 years. Dealing with fibromyalgia flares or autoimmune disease flare-ups can be difficult when you are trying to raise a family, maintain a marriage or even hold on to friends of many years. The problem is many people just don’t understand the seriousness of the disease and as far as they can tell, you look okay to them. Great that we look okay, but honestly having an invisible disease is not so wonderful.
That is because people are quick to assume, incorrectly of course, that we are just lazy, and not willing to work or just don’t want to hang out with friends. Gee, let me think. If I could choose between hanging out with friends for a fun night on the town or curled up in the fetal position in bed screaming out in pain, which would I pick? Which would you pick? Well, of course we would not pick to be in that kind of pain. Problem is, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and many autoimmune diseases are misunderstood by the public. So, we suffer in silence.
Over the years I have been to so many rheumatology appointments I can’t even count. I have pretty much tried everything within reason my doctors recommended, some with disastrous consequences. After that I started researching every medication and became my own advocate on figuring out how to get better. Somehow I know I am not the only one struggling with this. I got to the point that I was grasping at straws for anything that might help me lessen the pain just a little or have something close to a normal quality of life that was not going to medicate me and put me in a zombie like state. I mean I have three kids, a husband and still have goals and dreams. I wanted to be there for my kids, my husband, my family, my parents, my church. There are still things I want to do in this life, so laying at home in bed all day screaming and moaning in pain does not make my top ten list of things to do.
According to MedlinePlus, “There are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases, and some have similar symptoms. This makes it hard for your health care provider to know if you really have one of these diseases, and if so, which one. Getting a diagnosis can be frustrating and stressful. Often, the first symptoms are fatigue, muscle aches and a low fever. The classic sign of an autoimmune disease is inflammation, which can cause redness, heat, pain and swelling.
The diseases may also have flare-ups, when they get worse, and remissions, when symptoms get better or disappear. Treatment depends on the disease, but in most cases one important goal is to reduce inflammation.”
Eating lots of antioxidants is an important way to reduce inflammation. So instead of going on about how bad life can be, how about I share all the things that are working? I have tried chiropractic which I believe does help to some extent especially if you can find a chiropractor who is willing to offer a monthly wellness plan so you can afford to go weekly. Many chiropractors are switching to this and bypassing traditional health insurance all together. Thankfully my chiropractor, Dr. Benton at Suncoast Chiropractic in Port Charlotte FL offers a plan for just $69 a month. If you are local, check him out!
Changing my diet has helped as well. As far as dieting, yes doctors tell you to lose weight but I learned from other fibro friends that the weight never seemed to make a difference as far as the symptoms we experience with our illness. It seemed to matter more what kind of foods they were eating and how healthy they were. So I focus on the health and less on the weight. Seems to be working out well as I have lost weight and have less of the severe flares that are difficult to live with. I stopped eating processed foods and artificial sweeteners, also got rid of high fructose corn syrup out of the kitchen cabinets and pantry at our house. I really started reading the labels and stopped drinking soda.
Best part is I get to eat chocolate like there is no tomorrow! I am not even kidding. It was about eight years ago now that I first found out about healthy chocolate at a health food store in the Port Charlotte North Port Southwest Florida area. It was explained to me that the chocolate was not heated or dutched like candy so that it keeps in the antioxidants and flavonoids from the raw cacao that real pure chocolate is made from. This beyond chocolate also does not have waxes and fillers like the candy chocolate plus no processed sugars. Also great for those that are going gluten free, want diabetic friendly chocolates or vegetarian or clean. And the best part, this pure healthy chocolate is ethically sourced.
So how exactly is eating chocolate helping me?
This is what I do every day. I start with a wellness protein shake made with this healthy chocolate. I make mine with almond milk every morning and this gives me the energy to get going in the day. It is something I have learned not to skip. I bet you are wondering how I “Learned” not to skip it. Well it goes like this. I had been eating the healthy chocolates for awhile and they were coming out with the new shake to lose weight, thought it would be helpful for my fibro symptoms by losing weight so I tried it. What I did not understand was that it would quickly start helping my fibromyalgia symptoms. Well I had only ordered a certain amount to try it and ran out. At the time it took over a week to get more delivered-I thought I would die! I stayed in bed for days. It was not a good time. I really just don’t skip it at all and I bet you know I always have a little extra so I don’t run out. I don’t take chances! Plus I don’t want my friends to run out either! I take it on vacation, on cruises, pretty much wherever I go. It helps me THAT MUCH! So the rest of the day I eat chocolate along with my meals or for snacks. During a day I eat 3-5 pieces of chocolate. I don’t feel guilty as these are really good for you and are just 30-35 calories a piece. I alternate between Xo Love Bites & Xobiotic Squares, my favorites!
Life is not easy for those who suffer with an invisible disease but there are things we can do to improve our quality of life. One of those things is to increase the antioxidants and cocoa flavanols you eat. So if you are dealing with some serious issues yourself, why not try beyond healthy chocolates for a few months and see if you notice a difference. I bet you will. It sure has changed my life. I won’t give up my Healthy Chocolate Stash for anything. I do share however. 🙂

Those who have been suffering needlessly in chronic pain and with ineffective treatment for years with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, or ME/CFS, are not shocked by the recent actions of the CDC to quietly drop old treatment recommendations for Chronic Fatigue. In fact, the recommendations, which had been “a gradual increase in exercise and a form of psychotherapy known as cognitive behavioral therapy” simply did not work. The evidence the protocol was based on never supported the treatments, yet patients were actually expected to and forced to forgo prescription pain medications and other relief and instead focus on a gradual increase in exercise shown to actually make the condition worse and cognitive behavioral therapy that is meant to teach you how to deal with or not feel the pain at all that was proven to be ineffective. As a patient diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome myself, I can tell you it is a horrible feeling knowing that nobody seems to care at all about improving your quality of life. It was this ongoing struggle with attempting to improve quality of life that had me grasping at straws and trying any dietary changes or natural supplementation that might possibly help my condition.
Fast forward to seven years ago when I found out about something called Healthy Chocolate, an unheated chocolate that keeps in the antioxidants and flavanols found in the raw cacao that pure dark chocolate is made from. I quickly discovered that super-foods can help. Finding a way to improve sleep helped. Yes, there are things that can make a quality of life difference. I am hopeful that the CDC will be more bold in sharing the changes in their recommendations with doctors for those with ME/CFS as we have suffered for many years. We deserve to be heard and we deserve quality care.
I personally am thankful I found a Beyond Healthy Protein shake that gives me the energy to get out of bed in the morning. I literally don’t start my day without this shake. I recently had hurricane Irma go through our area in Southwest Florida and had a week without power and just could not figure out how to make my beyond chocolate protein shake for a few days since I normally made it with almond milk and ice. Well lets just say my body is not a fan of skipping this high antioxidant super-food shake. I am still recovering from skipping it and I just don’t ever want to miss it again! It made me want to remind people how much of a difference this protein shake has made in my life and even in my sons life. He is autistic and it has helped greatly with his mood swings.
So, if you happen to also suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease or any other issue that is causing you chronic pain that may be related to inflammation, seriously consider this shake and give it a good try. Don’t just try it for a week or so, give it a good 60 days. Keep a journal and keep track of the changes in your symptoms. Pay attention to more energy, less pain, more focus, better sleep. You just might improve the quality of your life. It’s worth a try. It sure helps me.
I am also a big fan of the Xobiotic Healthy Chocolates and the Xo Love Bites Beyond Healthy Chocolate. They are just 30 to 35 calories a piece and I space them out during the day so I am always giving my body antioxidants every 3-5 hours. Instead of running for an advil or pain medication, I first grab a piece of chocolate.
The key is that all chocolate is not the same.I am not talking about the candy chocolate. I am talking about healthy chocolate that is not heated, no waxes, fillers, no processed sugars. Every piece of our chocolate has the ORAC score that tells you how many antioxidants and flavonoids. Start looking and you will see there is nothing on the market like Healthy Chocolate.
Today is the day to try it for yourself and see how it helps you. Message us and we will be happy to email you Beyond Healthy Chocolate shake recipes, there are so many yummy ones to choose from, I know you will find your favorite! Well Beyond!Read More
You Can Beat Diabetes!
I have to be honest. 2017 has not been the best year. I have had chronic health issues for many years but 2017 was the year I was also diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. This was overwhelming for me at the time because I felt I had been eating right. I hope what I learned can be helpful to you if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic. I do know that if your doctor tells you that you are diabetic, the smart thing to do is to take it seriously. Unfortunately I have a friend who has been diabetic for years and ignored the warnings of his doctor and pretty much ate and did what he wanted. His pancreas has shut down and he is on a significant amount of insulin daily that might have been avoided had he heeded his doctors advice.
I know I took action immediately. I know many people that have lost limbs due to diabetes or had problems with chronic wound healing of their feet and I did not want to have to go there. I tried the medications my doctor originally prescribed, Metformin and then other combination medications with horrible side effects. No matter what I took, my blood sugar was not even close to under control as I was checking my blood sugar 5-6 times a day. My doctor had given the ok to incorporate Berberine 500 mg capsules 3 times a day with meals based on a study in a medical journal and she was fine with the healthy chocolate Beyond protein shake I had been having for breakfast for years and the Beyond Beyond healthy chocolates after meals and for cravings. Since my blood sugar was not under control and I noticed that my blood sugar would drop within 30 minutes of having a piece of Beyond Beyond chocolate, I started having a piece after every meal. So my plan was have berberine at the start of every meal and a piece of Beyond Healthy Chocolate after every meal or whenever I wanted a snack. My chocolates of choice were XoLove Bites and Xobiotic Chocolate. XoLove Bites are 35 calories and Xobiotics are 30. Both are diabetic friendly chocolates, with no waxes, fillers or processed sugars. They are sweetened with acai and blueberry. The Love Bites do have L-Arginine and Maca also.
In addition I have been working out on a treadmill at Planet Fitness. I go 4-5 days a week and for 30 minutes. This combination seems to have helped. I just got my blood work done and my A1C is down to 5.7. Not too bad considering I had to stop all my prescription diabetes medications a few months ago and I have just been taking the berberine, healthy Chocolate and the exercise. If I can do this, I know you can. I have been heavy pretty much my whole life. I wish I had known my blood sugar may have been the reason I was not able to lose weight. Would have been good to know. It is not always about how much you eat because I have not really cut down how much I eat that much. Maybe a little but not much.
It is a great feeling to know that you can have control.
Oh and did I mention? I am losing weight. Who knew that controlling your blood sugar would help you lose weight. I am down over 30 pounds in the last 2 months and hope to continue on my quest for better health.
I really do feel that the Berberine is helpful and so is the healthy chocolate. The Berberine is helpful in place of Metformin at the start of each meal and the healthy chocolate helped to lower my blood sugar but it also worked to curb my cravings and help me to stay on a healthier diet. I mean the chocolate tastes amazing and to know that I could eat chocolate whenever I want and not have to worry was awesome. So the combo is really the way to go.
You might want to start with the Beyond Healthy Chocolate Co. Variety pack until you figure out which chocolate is your favorite. I don’t recommend the peanut butter cups for controlling your diabetes as they are more of a treat. Any of the chocolates in the variety pack however, will work great. The variety pack has nuggets, power squares, Xobiotic squares and the Xo Love Bites. The Love Bites are my absolute favorites!!!!

Crohn’s Disease and Colitis can rule your life. Crohn’s is not easy to live with. According to the Mayo Clinic, Crohn’s Disease” Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes inflammation of your digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition.” This is painful and for many can be debilitating. So when you see new commercials on tv that outline new Crohns Disease Medications, you feel like there is hope.
One of the newer medications that has been advertised to treat Crohn’s disease is Humira. Humira does have side effects that include serious infections, so it is important to balance the pros and the cons. Another medication is Remicade with similar side effects. I am certainly not a doctor and can’t tell you what is best for you. Only you and your doctor can decide that. However as I get older, I have learned that prescription medications are not without risk. If I can change my diet or do something that can improve symptoms, that is certainly something I would consider.
It is for this reason that I am sharing this with you. My family has been eating Beyond Beyond Healthy Chocolates for over 7 years. We have noticed great benefits to our health especially with specific chronic health conditions. This is no ordinary chocolate. This is as close as you can get to raw chocolate or raw cacao in my book. The chocolate is not heated which is important because that means it keeps in all the antioxidants and cocoa flavanols that are so good for you. Unfortunately cooking or dutching chocolate, which is done with traditional chocolates, causes much of the chocolate health benefits to be lost. (Similar to overcooking your vegetables.) For this reason you have to look at more than just the percentage of chocolate but also how the chocolate is processed. The Beyond Beyond Healthy Chocolate uses a patented process not available to other chocolate makers. The antioxidants found in just one piece of our chocolate is over 5 times the amount of any other chocolates I could find on the market. Check it out for yourself.
Below is a video from the CEO of Well-Beyond, (Owners of Beyond Beyond Chocolate) Jeremy Reynolds, with his personal story about his Crohn’s Colitis. He has been able to manage his symptoms with this Healthy Chocolate. Why not give it 30-60 days and see if you notice a difference. We highly recommend the Beyond Xobiotic Chocolate with probiotics. Enjoy 3-5 pieces a day, spaced out. Each individually wrapped Xobiotic chocolate is just 30 calories!
