I am in my mid fifties and our family has dealt with many health issues over the years between our kids with special needs and a husband who was disabled after a work injury. Last week as I was sitting in the waiting room of our local hospital waiting for a loved ones heart surgery to finish, I had plenty of time to think about how to the heart and what we can do to keep our heart healthy. Growing up I loved watching the Donny & Marie show. It was one of my favorite shows. I read an interesting article about chocolate today.
The article was published in Medical News Today and was called “Health benefits and risks of chocolate”. It caught my attention because the article quickly shares that you don’t have to feel guilty about eating chocolate anymore. I get that! There was a time in my life, twenty years or so, where I refused to eat chocolate. It’s not that I did not like chocolate, are you kidding, I was a big fan. The problem was that I had been heavy my entire life, was always on some kind of diet, and always struggling and counting calories. In fact, I think I spent a good portion of my life just dieting it away not to be any thinner or healthier anyway. I had been told that chocolate was just candy and wasted calories, so it was something I avoided like the plague.
The Medical News Today article detailed quite a few studies that felt eating dark chocolate could improve certain health conditions including Cholesterol, Cognitive Function, Heart Disease, Stroke and so much more. What really interested me was this statement about a study published in the Journal of Nutrition,
“One study, published in The Journal of Nutrition, suggests that chocolate consumption might help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, also known as “bad cholesterol.”
The researchers set out to investigate whether chocolate bars containing plant sterols (PS) and cocoa flavanols (CF) have any effect on cholesterol levels.
The authors concluded: “Regular consumption of chocolate bars containing PS and CF, as part of a low-fat diet, may support cardiovascular health by lowering cholesterol and improving blood pressure.”
